Foreign Ministry Spokesperson calls for prudent U.S. handling of Taiwan matter

BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) — China opposes any form of official interactions between the United States and the Taiwan region of China, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated on Sunday, urging Washington to handle Taiwan-related issues with the utmost care and avoid sending any misleading signals to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.

The remarks came in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's recent signing of legislation requiring the State Department to regularly review U.S.-Taiwan relations and identify measures to deepen ties.

"Our consistent and clear position is that China firmly opposes any form of official exchanges between the United States and the Taiwan region of China," Lin stressed at a regular press briefing.

"Taiwan represents the very core of China's core interests and constitutes the foremost red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations," he emphasized. "The One-China principle forms the political foundation of bilateral ties."

Lin reminded that the U.S. government explicitly committed in the U.S.-China Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations: "The United States of America recognizes the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal government of China. Within this context, the American people will maintain cultural, commercial, and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan."

"We call on the United States to strictly adhere to the One-China principle and the three U.S.-China joint communiqués, exercise extreme caution in handling Taiwan matters, cease official contacts with Taiwan, and refrain from sending any erroneous signals to 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces," the spokesperson concluded.
